Privacy Policy
This policy covers this website (adamkarst.com) and two apps I build that sign in through the adamkarst.com Google account setup: HolyMole (holymole.adamkarst.com) and Lernen (learn.adamkarst.com), a German, French and Grade 5 math trainer. My other apps, including brewin'plans, VaultKnox and kinhaven, have their own sign-in setup and their own privacy policy, shown in each app.
Who I am
These sites are built and run by Adam Karst, an individual developer in Alberta, Canada. You can reach me at karst.adam@gmail.com.
My commitment
- I don't review, read or look at your data.
- I don't sell, rent or trade your data, and I don't share it with anyone.
- I don't use it for advertising, profiling, analytics or training AI models.
- The only exception is when you directly ask me to, for example by emailing me for help with a problem and sending me something to look at. I'll use what you send only for that request.
This website
adamkarst.com doesn't use cookies, analytics or trackers, and it has no accounts or forms. It's hosted on GitHub Pages, and it loads fonts and icons from Google Fonts and cdnjs. Like any web host, those services can see your IP address and browser details when your browser asks them for a file; their own privacy policies cover that.
HolyMole and Lernen
Both apps are static websites. There's no server of mine behind them, so your data never comes to me at all.
Where your data lives
- In your browser. Your HolyMole library and photos, and your Lernen progress (German, French and math), are stored in your browser's own storage on your device.
- In your Google Drive, if you sign in. The app keeps a copy in a folder in your own Drive (HolyMole, or Meinsten Deutsch, the folder's older name, for Lernen's German, French and math progress) so your devices stay in sync.
- In files you save. HolyMole can save everything to a file that you keep wherever you like.
Google sign-in
In HolyMole, signing in with Google is optional. Lernen's website asks you to sign in with Google before it opens. Either way, the app asks for:
- your basic profile (name, email address and picture), to show who's signed in;
- the
drive.filepermission, which lets the app see and change only the files it created itself in your Drive. It can't see anything else in your Drive.
Sign-in happens between your browser and Google. The access Google grants stays in your browser and is used only to read and write the app's own files in your Drive. It is never sent to me.
The apps' use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. That data is used only to provide the app's features you can see, is never transferred to anyone, is never used for advertising, and is never read by a person.
HolyMole's AI comparison
HolyMole can optionally compare two photos of a mole using Claude, by Anthropic. This only works with your own Anthropic API key, which you enter yourself and which stays in your browser. Photos are sent, directly from your browser to Anthropic, only when you press the button to compare them. Anthropic's privacy policy covers that request. I never see the photos or the result.
Lernen's voice
On the website, German audio comes from audio files that come with the app or from your browser's built-in voices, and French audio uses your browser's built-in voices. If you choose an online voice in Settings, your browser sends the sentence being read to that voice provider (for example, Microsoft Edge's online voices). The math has no audio and uses no outside services.
Removing your data
- From a browser: sign out in the app, or use its settings to remove everything from this browser. Clearing your browser's site data does the same.
- From your Drive: delete the app's folder from Google Drive.
- The app's access to your Google account: remove it at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Because I don't hold your data, there's nothing for me to delete on my side. If you ever emailed me something, ask and I'll delete it.
Children
HolyMole isn't aimed at children. Lernen includes Alberta Grade 5 math, so children may well use it. The same promise covers everyone: a child's answers, progress, name, email address and account never come to me. They stay in the browser on the child's device and in the Google Drive of the account they sign in with, and I can't see any of it.
A young child should use Lernen with a parent or guardian, who should set up and look after the Google account they sign in with. Google has its own rules for children's accounts; for example, a supervised account may need a parent's approval before it can use an app. A parent or guardian can remove the app's access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions, and can delete the app's folder from that account's Drive to remove the child's progress.
I don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included, and I don't use anyone's data for advertising, profiling or anything else.
Changes
If this policy changes, I'll update this page and the date at the top. I won't change it to allow using your data in ways this version doesn't.
